Anthurium besseae is a rare and highly sought-after species native to the rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador. It’s best known for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves with deeply etched, silvery-white veining that contrasts beautifully against dark green to bronze foliage. The leaves often have a soft, suede-like texture and a dramatic appearance, making this species a favorite among collectors of velvet-leaf anthuriums. It’s also a parent to many popular hybrids due to its striking foliage and compact growth habit.
Care Tips for Anthurium besseae
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can damage the delicate leaves.
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%) to thrive. A humidifier or enclosed cabinet is beneficial.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch to dry slightly before watering.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Avoid cold drafts.
-
Soil: Use a chunky, well-aerated mix—peat moss, perlite, orchid bark, and a bit of charcoal work well.
-
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer.
-
Airflow: Ensure good air circulation to prevent bacterial or fungal issues, which this species can be prone to.
