The 12-tooth bevel gear (part 6589) was introduced in 1994, making its first appearance in the legendary 8880 Super Car set. It was created as a much stronger and more durable replacement for the older, notoriously weak 14-tooth bevel gear (part 6576) from 1980. Because three of these gears are used inside every Technic differential produced since 1994, the 12-tooth bevel gear is one of the most-produced and widely-used gears in LEGO history.
